Formula
Weighti = Assignmentsi × Difficultyi
Total Weight = Σ (Assignmentsj × Difficultyj)
Allocated Timei = (Weighti ÷ Total Weight) × Total Available Time
Time per Assignmenti = Allocated Timei ÷ Assignmentsi
Each subject receives a share of the total homework time proportional to its weighted load, which is the product of the number of assignments and the difficulty rating (1 = very easy, 5 = very hard). A subject with 3 assignments at difficulty 4 receives twice the time of a subject with 3 assignments at difficulty 2.
Assumptions & References
- Difficulty is a self-assessed integer scale from 1 (very easy) to 5 (very hard).
- All assignments within a subject are assumed to be of equal effort.
- The formula uses proportional weighted allocation; subjects with 0 assignments receive 0 minutes regardless of difficulty.
- Total available time must be between 1 and 1440 minutes (up to 24 hours).
- Up to 6 subjects can be planned in a single session.
- Break time is not deducted automatically; the Pomodoro Technique (25 min work / 5 min break) is recommended as a study strategy — Cirillo, F. (2006). The Pomodoro Technique.
- Research suggests distributing study time by subject difficulty improves retention — Kornell, N. & Bjork, R.A. (2008). Learning concepts and categories. Psychological Science, 19(6), 585–592.
